MamaBanna (MB) is a lifestyle brand that showcases contemporary Eritrean culture through apparel, video interviews, and long-form journalism. It's founder Banna Girmay works seamlessly between Los Angeles, California and Asmara, Eritrea, blending unique aspects of each geographic hub into her projects.
DESIGN CONCEPT
Prior to the logo design, the MB team developed a series of core garments. These pieces blended visual motifs from traditional African garments and California surf inspired apparel. The logo needed to capture all these references in a single legible form. Coastal motifs were a huge element of the logo design. The MB team loved the shapes of mountains and waves and wanted to integrate these forms into the visual design. I started the study with the MamaBanna name which led into a full typeface study.
